Homework Helper is offered to grammar and middle schools students who face a variety of circumstances. You should conference with your child’s teacher to use the service and approval of the Principal is required. A student can use this system as often as necessary – even daily – although that is rarely indicated. A student can avail the service on a day’s notice as long as parents and teachers agree it is beneficial. Our goal is always to maintain the standard routine of the classroom where possible, and to integrate the student into that routine with the tools available through the Homework Helper. The program is staffed by a professional teacher, and is designed to target any of several goals:
- Organizational skills – Some students need help staying organized. Homework Helper offers the student a quiet environment in which a teacher who is knowledgeable about his or her circumstances can help anticipate long-term assigments, check for missing work, help organize the student planner, and help the student reach independence.
- Homework – Some parents find that homework is challenging not only for their student, but also for them. We have often seen families in which developing students may be resistive at home, refuse assistance from parents, and fail at completing their work. Homework Helper is often a bridge to independence. Students rarely fail to complete assignments with the close accountability and support of the instructor, and the result is that they create space for success to occur. This service is often temporary, but extremely beneficial
- Testing or other accommodation – New Covenant often identifies students who can succeed with accommodations to the classroom instruction. Sometimes this is as simple as moving a student’s seating location in a classroom, or altering the size of the print on a test. Often specialized testing reveals accommodations that cannot be made in the classroom directly, but which can be made through Homework Helper. For example, a student who needed more time to take a test, or who needed the test administered orally can accomplish those tasks with integrity with an after-school instructor.
Homework Helper is a useful resource for parents with students who can and should be successful at New Covenant, but who need extra assistance to transition to full independent learning, or who need an accommodation that allows them to succeed.
Homework Helper is fee based. It is not child-care; rather, it is an academic service that offers value to the larger academic endeavor a student is pursuing in the classroom. Check with your student’s teacher or the Principle for detailed information and the fee structure.
